Arsenal came from behind to beat Everton 2-1 at Emirates Stadium and keep within striking distance of Barclays Premier League leaders Manchester United.Louis Saha had put the visitors ahead on 24 minutes when he slotted home.

However, the Gunners turned the match around through substitute Andrey Arshavin and Laurent Koscielny's header. The Gunners made some 10 changes from the side which had laboured to a 2-1 win over Huddersfield in the FA Cup on Sunday.

And it was Everton - who have lost only six matches, but find themselves in the lower half of the table because of some 12 draws - who started brightly. With Diniyar Bilyaletdinov offering support to both Saha in attack and then making up the numbers in midfield, it was easy to see why David Moyes' men are hard to beat.

Everton continued to make all the running during the opening exchanges.Arsenal finally got some passing together as Bacary Sagna was played in down the right, only to be chopped down by Sylvain Distin who was immediately shown a yellow card by Lee Mason.

Arsenal kept the pressure on the two Manchester clubs at the top of the Barclays Premier League as they overwhelmed Birmingham City at a rainswept St Andrew's.A Robin van Persie free-kick and Samir Nasri's 13th goal of the season put the visitors in control before an own goal from Roger Johnson added to City's misery.

The Gunners remain in third spot, two points adrift of United and City, after a sixth away success of the season.Arsenal were worthy winners and carved out a host of gilt-edged opportunities. Skipper Cesc Fabregas pulled the strings in midfield and City struggled to cope with the runs of Van Persie and Nasri.

Only poor finishing and a couple of fine saves from Ben Foster kept the scoreline respectable.Birmingham had already slipped back into the relegation zone before kick-off and failed to match the quality of their performance in the midweek draw with Manchester United.

Manager Alex McLeish will not press the panic button and is aware of the need to bring in a quality striker during the January transfer window. But he will also be concerned at the way his normally frugal defence was cut to ribbons by the rampant Gunners.

Arsenal started brightly and Theo Walcott skated past the challenge of left-back Liam Ridgewell but shot into the side netting from a narrow angle.

Two magical goals from Samir Nasri rescued Arsenal as moved top of the Barclays Premier League with a 2-1 win over Fulham at the Emirates Stadium. The France star's jaw-dropping composure was in stark contrast to that of his team-mates, who almost threw away another three points in front of their own fans.

Nasri put them ahead early on but a clash of heads between Laurent Koscielny and Sebastien Squillaci allowed Diomansy Kamara to equalise before Nasri netted a glorious winner. With Manchester United's match postponed due to the big freeze and Chelsea held by Everton, the victory sent Arsenal a point clear at the summit.

But this was far from a champion performance, more from a side that had lost their last two home league matches. The Gunners announced before the match that their players and directors had agreed to donate their day's wages to Centrepoint.

They had been less than charitable down the years to Fulham, who had never won at Arsenal in more than a century of trying. That wait looked set to continue when Nasri's spectacular opener put the home side ahead in the 14th minute.

Andrey Arshavin pounced on Aaron Hughes' error before feeding the France star, who sold two sublime dummies before lashing the ball into the top corner.Nasri was already guilty of a glaring miss after more superb work by the rampant Arshavin, who was running the show two days after helping his native Russia win the right to host the 2018 World Cup.

The first chance of the match had fallen to the striker, his close-range volley blocked by Mark Schwarzer, who had looked certain to join Arsenal in January before signing a new contract with Fulham on Thursday.

Arsenal survived a second-half fightback from Aston Villa to claim a thrilling 4-2 victory at Villa Park. The Gunners looked to be cruising to victory after dominating the opening 45 minutes and netting through Andrey Arshavin and Samir Nasri. But Villa were transformed in the second period and Ciaran Clark struck twice either side of Marouane Chamakh's 10th goal of the campaign before Jack Wilshere's injury-time clincher.

It enabled Arsene Wenger's side to end an unhappy week on a high note after the derby defeat by Tottenham Hotspur and the Champions League setback away to Braga.Arsenal played some superb flowing football with Arshavin and Nasri a constant threat. But their soft under belly, which had seen them throw away a two-goal lead against Spurs, was almost exposed again.

Ashley Young posed more of a threat in the second period while Clark showed his potential.Arsenal were almost gifted the lead in the opening 30 seconds after sloppy play by Stephen Warnock. He played the ball straight into the path of Arshavin who released Chamakh inside the box.

Villa keeper Brad Friedel partially blocked the shot but it needed James Collins to make a goal-line clearance. The Gunners were first to settle and Tomas Rosicky squandered a clearcut opening.

Goals from Bacary Sagna and Cesc Fabregas proved decisive as Arsenal held off an Everton fightback to move second in the Barclays Premier League.

Sagna opened the scoring after 35 minutes at Goodison Park with a ferocious strike from a tight angle and Fabregas doubled the lead early in the second half.

Samir Nasri and Marouane Chamakh spurned glorious chances to add to the lead but Everton produced a thrilling finish and deservedly pulled one back through Tim Cahill late on.

The Gunners also had Lukasz Fabianksi to thank for their three points, the goalkeeper having produced fine saves to deny Jermaine Beckford, Steven Pienaar and Louis Saha.

Jack Rodwell also blazed a fine chance over as Everton refused to surrender their seven-match unbeaten run without a fight.

The Toffees had their first chance of the afternoon from a set-piece as Mikel Arteta swung in a corner but Saha, impeded as team-mate Cahill jumped for the same ball, headed wide.

Nasri broke clear for Arsenal but opted not to pass as he reached the box and Sylvain Distin stuck out a leg to block his shot.

Everton countered swiftly from the resulting corner as Cahill released Coleman down the right. The exciting Irishman beat Fabregas as he raced into the box but Cahill headed over.

Andy Carroll made headlines as his goal gave Newcastle United a shock 1-0 win over title-chasing Arsenal at Emirates Stadium.

The England Under-21 striker has been tipped to feature in the senior squad for the friendly with France later this month.

However, under the close eye of watching England coach Fabio Capello, the Newcastle number nine headed in what proved to be the winner at the end of the first half.

Although Arsenal twice hit the woodwork through Cesc Fabregas' deflected free-kick and Theo Walcott, the Gunners were well below par and their miserable afternoon was compounded by the dismissal of centre-back Laurent Koscielny in stoppage time for a professional foul.

After an initial spell of pressure from Newcastle, Arsenal slowly built momentum.

Walcott chased a long pass upfield which was smothered by keeper Tim Krul, before Marouane Chamakh just failed to collect Alex Song's pass at the edge of a crowded penalty area.

Newcastle had been thumped 4-0 by Arsenal in the Carling Cup tie at St James' Park a fortnight ago, but went into this match buoyed by their thrashing of local rivals Sunderland.

Alex Song's late header gave Barclays Premier League title chasers Arsenal a narrow victory over West Ham United to deny the bottom club a deserved point at Emirates Stadium.

Robert Green, in front of watching England manager Fabio Capello, had pulled off a string of fine saves to keep the Gunners at bay.

However, with just two minutes left, Song dived to head home Gael Clichy's cross as Arsene Wenger's improving side kept up the pressure on leaders Chelsea.

Arsenal started brightly, with Andrey Arshavin put away down the left a couple of times, but the Russian was unable to make the most of the openings.

On nine minutes, Song tripped Frederic Piquionne conceding a free-kick on the left, which Scott Parker - so impressive during the Hammers' Carling Cup win over Stoke - whipped in and Lukasz Fabianski punched clear.

At the other end, Arshavin's deflected cross flew through the West Ham six-yard box before Song sent a bullet header over.

Theo Walcott plundered a well-taken double as Arsenal powered their way into the Carling Cup quarter-finals with a 4-0 win at Newcastle United.

Walcott's 53rd-minute strike, when defender Mike Williamson appeared to be blocked by Nicklas Bendtner, made it 2-0 after Tim Krul's own goal in first-half injury time.

However, there was no fortune about Bendtner's 83rd-minute strike and Walcott's second with two minutes remaining as the Gunners powered their way into the last eight.

West Ham United's substitutes came to Avram Grant's rescue as they helped seal a place in the last eight with an extra-time 3-1 victory over Stoke City.

Samir Nasri, Alex Song and Nicklas Bendtner were on target as Arsenal struck a blow for the old guard against 10-man Manchester City.

City had been looking to reclaim second place in the Barclays Premier League but hopes of a fifth successive win were all but dashed with the early sending off of Dedryck Boyata at Eastlands.

Nasri put the Gunners ahead 20 minutes into a fiery contest and although Joe Hart kept City in contention with a penalty save from Cesc Fabregas, Song and Bendtner finished them off.

Victory lifted Arsenal back into second spot, above City on goal difference, and contradicted recent criticism of the Londoners' record against their perceived title rivals.

The momentum all appeared to be with City prior to the match, which was preceded by a memorial service and minute's applause for their late manager Malcolm Allison.

Carlos Tevez was back to lead the City line while Emmanuel Adebayor, despite a midweek hat-trick, was left on the bench against his former club.

Arsenal got their Barclays Premier League campaign back on track with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Birmingham City - but had Jack Wilshere sent off in stoppage time for a rash challenge.

The Blues took a shock lead through Nikola Zigic after 33 minutes as once again the Gunners - who had lost their past two league mastches before the international break - failed to make the most of early possession.

However, Samir Nasri levelled with a penalty just before half-time, before Marouane Chamakh slotted home a well-taken effort two minutes after the restart which proved enough for all three points.

The win was soured late on, however, when England teenager Wilshere showed his immaturity with a reckless challenge on Zigic which earned him a straight red and a three-match ban.

Defeat at Chelsea last time out had left Arsenal some seven points off the pace, and manager Arsene Wenger had called on his team to produce a strong response from kick-off.

It was almost that as Chamakh went close after just four minutes following a neat one-two with Wilshere on the edge of Birmingham's box, but Stephen Carr blocked his side-foot effort.
